What “comprehensive” means, and why it matters
The word in the school’s name is not decoration. A comprehensive school offers technical, commercial or vocational subject streams alongside the academic one. That is the most useful thing to ask about when you get through.
- Ask which streams actually run this year. Offerings depend on staffing and equipment, and a stream listed historically may not be on the timetable now.
- Subject choice happens at the end of Grade 9 and it constrains what a learner can study afterwards. Ask what each stream leads to before choosing.
- Mathematics and mathematical literacy are not interchangeable. Many university and TVET programmes require mathematics, and switching across later is difficult.
