Eland Platinum Mine, near Brits in North West, is owned and operated by Northam Platinum Holdings. Northam bought 100% of Eland from Glencore Operations South Africa in February 2017 for R175 million, held it on care and maintenance while it studied the Kukama shaft, and then began recommissioning work.

If someone offers you a job at Eland in exchange for money, it is a scam. Recruitment fraud is endemic around South African mines, particularly where a mine is recommissioning and hiring is expected. No legitimate employer charges a work-seeker a fee – the Employment Services Act prohibits it outright – and Northam operates the toll-free fraud hotline above precisely for reports of this kind.

- Processing on site: a concentrator with a nameplate capacity of 250 000 tonnes per month, a chrome spiral recovery plant, and a tailings storage facility.
- Two decline systems and surface support infrastructure, which is what made the orebody attractive as a low-cost, medium-term growth option rather than a greenfields build.
- Northam’s acquisition also carried a chrome marketing agreement, so chrome recovered alongside the PGMs is part of the operation’s output.

- The mine itself is near Brits in North West province. It is an operating industrial site, not a public facility – there is no walk-in reception for general enquiries and site access is controlled.
- Vacancies are advertised through Northam’s careers pages rather than at the mine gate. Treat any other channel with suspicion.
Support and escalation routes

- Health and safety concerns at a mine are regulated under the Mine Health and Safety Act by the Mine Health and Safety Inspectorate within the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources, which can and does stop operations under section 54.
- Community, environmental or land concerns – dust, water, blasting, resettlement – are dealt with through the mine’s Social and Labour Plan obligations, which are enforceable conditions of a mining right and are overseen by the same department.
