Potholes Contact Details

Verified 27 September 2026Official source onlyIndependent directoryPublished by Silas T Nkoana, Cape TownReport a wrong number

To report a pothole, contact whoever owns the road: in Johannesburg call the Johannesburg Roads Agency on 0860 562 874, in Cape Town call 0800 656 463, in Tshwane call 012 358 9999, and in Durban call eThekwini on 031 311 1111. There is no single national pothole number: SANRAL looks after national (N) roads, provincial roads departments handle provincial roads, and the municipality handles suburban streets.

Official contact channels

Start by working out who owns the road, then use that authority’s line:

  1. Identify the road: a national N-route belongs to SANRAL, a provincial road to the provincial roads department, and a municipal street to the city or municipality.
  2. Johannesburg: call the JRA on 0860 562 874 or Joburg Connect on 011 298 5000, or email hotline@jra.org.za. The JRA says to call Joburg Connect to report any road-related faults.
  3. Cape Town: call 0800 656 463 or email Transport.Info@capetown.gov.za.
  4. Tshwane: call 012 358 9999 or the toll-free number 080 111 1556.
  5. Durban (eThekwini): call 031 311 1111 or email sizakala@durban.gov.za.

What this organisation provides

This is a routing page, not one organisation. Each authority fixes the roads it owns:

  • SANRAL manages national roads and has regional offices for the N-road network: Western Cape (Bellville) 021 957 4600, KwaZulu-Natal (Pietermaritzburg) 033 392 8100, Eastern Cape (Port Elizabeth) 041 398 3200 and Limpopo (Polokwane) 012 426 6200. The corporate office is on 012 844 8000.
  • Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) looks after Johannesburg’s roads for the City of Johannesburg.
  • City of Cape Town lists potholes under “Roads and stormwater”, together with flooding, fallen trees, open manholes and chemical spills, on 0800 656 463.
  • City of Tshwane and eThekwini Municipality take reports through their call centres. eThekwini does not list a roads-specific line, so use the general Sizakala customer service.

Support and escalation routes

If a pothole damaged your vehicle on a Johannesburg road, you can lodge a public liability claim with the JRA, for example for a burst tyre linked to road infrastructure it maintains. Complete the JRA Claim Form and submit it with supporting documents:

  • By email to claims@jra.org.za
  • By post to P.O. Box 1450 Braamfontein 2017
  • By hand delivery

For claim queries, the JRA lists 011 491 5734 and 011 298 5168. The JRA states that it receives a claim on a without-prejudice basis, and receiving it does not mean it admits liability. For roads in other cities, ask the municipality’s call centre about its own claims process.
