What Siyanda Bakgatla Platinum Mine does
SBPM describes itself as an emerging, black-owned PGM mining and processing business. About 90% of its production targets the UG2 reef, and Merensky ore is also mined. The ore is milled and floated into a PGM-rich concentrate.
About three-quarters of underground mining is conventional stoping with strike pillars, at depths of 850m to 1,400m. There is also opencast mining on the farm Turfbult. A sister company, Masa Chrome, extracts chrome from SBPM’s tailings.
