Sizekhaya Holdings (RF) (Pty) Ltd is the operator of the South African National Lottery. It runs the lottery under licence, which is a different thing from regulating it, and it is a different organisation again from the body that distributes lottery good cause money. Knowing which of the three you need is most of the work.

Note that the head office is given as 36 Homestead Road, Edenburg, Sandton while the Gauteng regional office is given as 36 Homestead Crescent, Rivonia. Both appear on the same site; confirm which one you need before travelling.

Player queries go through the lottery, not the holding company

If your question is about a ticket, a draw result, an account or a prize, start on nationallottery.co.za, which carries the results, the FAQs and the support resources. The Sizekhaya call centre is the escalation point behind it, and the regional offices deal mainly with retailers and trade matters rather than with individual players.

How to tell a real lottery contact from a scam

Lottery scams are among the most common frauds in South Africa, and a change of operator is exactly when they multiply, because nobody is sure yet what the real channels look like. Three rules cover almost all of them. You cannot win a lottery you did not enter, so any message announcing a win on a ticket you never bought is false. A genuine prize is never conditional on you paying anything first, whether it is called a release fee, a courier charge, a tax or a bank clearance. And a real claim is made by you, in person or through the official channels, with the ticket or the account that bought it, not through a WhatsApp group, a Facebook page or a stranger phoning you.

The regulator and the good cause fund

• The National Lotteries Commission regulates the lottery and handles complaints about the operator; it is not the operator
• Applications for lottery good cause funding go to the Commission, never to Sizekhaya, and there is no fee to apply
• For a gambling harm concern, the South African Responsible Gambling Foundation counselling line is the right route rather than the lottery operator
