A debt counsellor is not a lender

This distinction sends people to the wrong place constantly. A debt counsellor does not give you money. They restructure what you already owe into a single reduced monthly payment and negotiate that with your creditors.

If what you actually need is credit, a debt counsellor is the wrong call. And if you are already under debt review, you may not take new credit until you have completed it and hold a clearance certificate.

Two registration prefixes, and why the difference matters

NCR registration numbers carry a prefix that tells you what the business is allowed to do, and it is worth reading rather than glancing at.

  • NCRDC is a debt counsellor, as here with NCRDC1078. They restructure debt.
  • NCRCP is a credit provider, meaning a lender. A business offering you a loan should carry an NCRCP number, not an NCRDC one.
  • A mismatch is a warning sign. An outfit quoting an NCRDC number while offering you a loan is either confused about its own registration or hoping you will not check.
  • The register also shows lapsed and cancelled registrations, so confirm the status, not merely that the number exists.

Before you sign up for debt review

  • Ask what it costs and how fees are taken. Debt review fees are regulated and come out of your restructured payment, not as cash demanded upfront.
  • Payments run through a registered payment distribution agency, which pays your creditors. Money should never go into an individual’s account.
  • Ask how long the plan runs, and get the schedule in writing before you agree.
  • Be sceptical of anyone offering fast removal from debt review for a fee. There is a defined legal process, and shortcuts sold over the phone are not it.
  • Complaints about a debt counsellor go to the NCR on complaints@ncr.org.za.
