A victim has the right to make representations to a parole board and to be told when the offender is considered for release. That right has to be exercised: register your interest with the correctional centre, in writing, so the board hears from you.

Visiting someone in custody

Rules differ between centres, but the essentials do not.

• Visits are booked in advance and slots are limited, so confirm before travelling.
• Every visitor produces identification, and children are usually accompanied by a guardian.
• What may be brought in is tightly limited, and searches are routine.
• Smuggling anything in is a criminal offence, including a phone, and it ends visiting rights.

Awaiting trial is different

A person who has not been sentenced is not serving a sentence, and their access to legal representation, bail applications and visits follows different rules. Legal Aid South Africa assists people who qualify on means.

Nobody may charge a fee to arrange a visit, a transfer or parole. Anyone offering is committing an offence. Complaints about conditions or conduct go to the Judicial Inspectorate for Correctional Services. Verified 26 August 2026.
