IPID Contact Details
IPID, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate, has its head office on 012 399 0000 at the Benstra Building, 473B Stanza Bopape Street, Pretoria. Every province has its own office and its own complaints mailbox. We read this on ipid.gov.za on 24 September 2026.

Use your province’s mailbox, not the national one
This is the distinction that matters most, and getting it wrong sends your complaint to the wrong desk entirely.
IPID runs a separate complaints mailbox for each province, in the form Complaints.Province@ipid.gov.za. A complaint about a police officer should go to the province where the incident happened.
The plain address, complaints@ipid.gov.za without a province, is not for complaints about the police. IPID states that it is for service delivery complaints against an IPID official. In other words, it is for complaining about IPID itself.
Note the spelling of the provincial addresses. They run the words together with no spaces or hyphens, so it is Complaints.KwaZuluNatal@ipid.gov.za and Complaints.NorthernCape@ipid.gov.za.

Durban’s street is listed as Dorothy Nyembe Street, which IPID also gives by its former name, Gardiner Street. Older signage and directions may still use the old name.

A district office uses the same provincial mailbox as its province, so a complaint emailed from Rustenburg still goes to Complaints.NorthWest@ipid.gov.za.
What IPID investigates
IPID’s stated mission is to conduct independent, impartial investigations of identified criminal offences allegedly committed by members of the South African Police Service and the Metro Police Services, and to make recommendations in line with the IPID Act.
Two things follow from that. It covers metro police as well as SAPS, so a complaint about a JMPD or metro officer belongs with IPID too. And it deals with criminal conduct by officers, not with general dissatisfaction about service.
IPID is not an emergency service. For a crime in progress, call 10111. IPID investigates after the fact.
Lodging a complaint
IPID publishes a complaints procedure and a downloadable complaints form on its website, and reading the procedure before you write will save time.
Have the date, time and place of the incident, the station or unit involved, and any case or reference number. If you know the officer’s name or force number, include it.
IPID’s website also lists a national spokesperson and a parliamentary office. Those are for media and parliamentary matters respectively, not for lodging a complaint, and the parliamentary office states explicitly that it deals with parliament issues only and not with IPID mandated cases.
