Before you appear

Ask these while you still have leverage, which is before filming rather than after.

• What can the footage be used for, for how long, and in which countries and formats?
• Are you paid, and is anything deducted? Get it in writing.
• Can you see the edit before broadcast? Usually not, and knowing that is the point.
• What happens to personal information you provide, and who else receives it?
• A child appearing requires a parent or guardian’s consent, and additional protections apply.

Complaining about a broadcast

Content complaints go to the Broadcasting Complaints Commission of South Africa for member broadcasters, and licensing matters to ICASA. Note the channel, date, time and programme, and complain promptly, since recordings are kept for a limited period.

Personal information complaints go to the Information Regulator, and harassment following a broadcast can be met with a protection order, obtained free at a magistrate’s court. Verified 26 August 2026.
