Two AFM presidencies, and they are different jobs

This is the distinction that will save you writing to the wrong office.

The Apostolic Faith Mission of South Africa is the national church. It has led its own leadership since 1908, and its current president is Dr H.J. Weideman. If your business is with a South African AFM assembly, a pastor, a certificate, a wedding or a local congregation, that is the body you want and the Centurion office is the route.

AFM International is a separate structure. The church describes it as the body that equips the leaders of member churches and promotes fellowship, networking and partnership between AFM national churches. It is the international presidency that has been associated with Frank Chikane, and it operates from the same building and the same telephone number in Centurion.

The AFM says it has existed since 1908, is the first and largest Pentecostal church in South Africa with about 1.4 million members here, and is established in 29 countries. A single national office fields all of that, so say at the start which country and which structure your question concerns.

His other roles, and what they route to

A curriculum vitae lodged with Parliament in 2021 sets out the rest. Read it as a record of that date rather than as today’s directory entry, because roles of this kind turn over.

• Director-General in the Presidency and Secretary of the Cabinet. That office ended in 2009. Anything arising from it is a Presidency record now, and the toll free public enquiry line is 17737.
• Moderator of the Commission of the Churches on International Affairs of the World Council of Churches, and a member of the All Africa Conference of Churches. Both are international ecumenical bodies with their own secretariats.
• Chair of the board of the AFM Theological College, alongside board seats in the private sector. College business goes to the college, not to the church’s national office.
• Former General Secretary of the South African Council of Churches and former Director of the Institute for Contextual Theology. Both are historical.

Why no direct details appear here

The AFM does publish addresses for its named national office bearers on its own website. We have not copied those across. They belong to individuals rather than to desks, they change when an office changes hands, and a personal address republished in a directory outlives the post it was attached to.

The general office address does the same job without that problem. A message to info@afm-ags.org reaches somebody whose work is to route it, and it will still work next year.

There is a further reason for care with a cleric who was also a senior official. Requests for prayer, for money and for intervention in personal crises follow that combination, and a direct line published where it ranks in search turns into a channel for all of it. The church office is equipped for those approaches and an individual is not.

Before you write

• Say which structure you mean: a local assembly, the national church, the theological college or the international body. They share an office and not much else.
• For anything involving a donation, ask for the registered name and the public benefit organisation number, and check them against the number above before transferring money.
• Never send banking details or money on the strength of a message claiming to come from a church leader. Confirm it on 012 644 0490 first.
