Potchefstroom is a long-standing South African Army town, but military bases do not publish public switchboards. The Department of Defence publishes central contacts instead, and every legitimate enquiry, from recruitment to service records, is routed through those rather than through a base gate.
Official contact channels
- Department of Defence: 012 355 6321 or 012 355 6999
- Email: [email protected]. Fax: 012 347 7445
- Defence Headquarters: Armscor Building, corner Nossob and Boeing Streets, Erasmuskloof, Pretoria
- Postal address: Private Bag X910, Pretoria, 0001
- The SA Army maintains its own site at army.mil.za, though several of its regional contact pages currently return errors
What you probably need
- Joining the SANDF: recruitment runs through the annual Military Skills Development System intake, advertised by the Department of Defence. Applications are not taken at a base gate and there is no application fee
- Service records, medals or discharge papers: these go through Defence Headquarters, and for veterans also through the Department of Military Veterans on 012 765 9300
- Reserve force enquiries go through the unit you wish to join, identified via the Army site or Defence Headquarters
- A civilian job on a base is advertised as a public service post, not arranged in person
Visiting or approaching a base
- A military base is a National Key Point. Access is controlled, and you need prior authorisation and identification to enter
- Do not photograph a base, its gates or its aircraft. It is restricted, and it is the fastest way to have a straightforward visit become a security matter
- Ceremonial events, open days and museum visits are announced publicly. Arrange attendance in advance through the announced channel
- If you are delivering goods or providing a service, you need the unit own arrangement and a gate authorisation in the name of the person expecting you
Recruitment scams
- The SANDF never charges to apply. Any request for money for an application form, a medical, a uniform, transport or a place on a list is a scam, and it is a common one
- Recruitment is not conducted over WhatsApp by an individual, and no genuine recruiter needs your bank details to process an application
- Verify any offer against the Department of Defence numbers above before sending a document or paying anything
- Report attempted fraud in the department name to the police and to the department on [email protected]
