The University of Pretoria runs two separate contact centres and admissions queries go to different ones depending on how you intend to study. Ringing the wrong one is the most common reason an application query goes unanswered.
University of Pretoria admissions contacts
- Student Service Centre, for contact students: 012 420 3111, or [email protected]
- UPOnline Call Centre, for online students: 012 420 8325, or [email protected]
- ITS Helpdesk, if the online application system itself is failing: 012 420 3051, or [email protected]
- 24-hour operations: 012 420 2310
Take the ITS Helpdesk seriously as a separate route. A password that will not reset, a document that will not upload or a portal that will not load is a technical fault, and the Student Service Centre cannot fix it. Sending that to the helpdesk instead saves days.
Do the preparation before you apply
UP publishes application guidelines and a set of important dates, and says openly that you should prepare your documents before applications open rather than after. It also publishes a programme calculator: you capture your school subjects and marks and it tells you which programmes you may be considered for. Use it before you apply, because a well-matched application is worth more than three speculative ones.
- Apply as soon as applications open for the academic year; places close before the closing date on popular programmes
- Residence accommodation is a separate application with its own dates, and it is not granted automatically with an academic offer
- Fees, funding and financial aid have a separate registration, and UP states plainly that applying does not guarantee financial assistance
Chasing an application
Have your application or student number and your identity number ready, and say which programme and which year you applied for. Ask specifically what status your application is in and what, if anything, is outstanding. An application sitting incomplete because one document did not upload looks identical from the outside to one under consideration, and only the centre can tell you which it is.
Support lines worth knowing about
- UP Counselling Careline: 0800 747 747
- Crisis Service: 0800 006 428
These are for registered students and are free to call. They are listed here because the period around applications, results and registration is when students most often need them and least often know they exist.
A note on application scams
Nobody at a public university can guarantee you a place for a fee, and no genuine offer arrives by WhatsApp from a private number. UP takes applications only through its own online application system, and it publishes its careers, tenders and ethics hotline links openly on its own site. If somebody offers to fast-track your admission or to secure residence for a payment, that is fraud, and the ethics hotline on the UP site is where it belongs.
