University of Pretoria Contact Details

Verified 24 September 2026Official source onlyIndependent directoryPublished by Silas T Nkoana, Cape TownReport a wrong number

The University of Pretoria’s postal code is 0028. The full postal address is University of Pretoria, Private Bag X20, Hatfield, 0028, and it is the same for every department, including Consumer and Food Sciences. The Student Service Centre is 012 420 3111 or ssc@up.ac.za. We read this on up.ac.za on 24 September 2026.

Postal and physical addresses

Postal addressUniversity of Pretoria, Private Bag X20, Hatfield, 0028
Physical addressUniversity of Pretoria, corner Lynnwood Road and Roper Street, Hatfield
Student Service Centre012 420 3111, ssc@up.ac.za
Operational hoursMonday to Friday, 08:00 to 16:00

The Hatfield campus houses UP’s central administration, which is why its address is the one used for the university as a whole.

Departments do not have their own postal codes

This is the point that sends people searching, so it is worth stating plainly.

UP publishes one postal address for the whole university, a private bag rather than a street address. The Department of Consumer and Food Sciences does not have a postal code of its own, and neither does any other department.

To post something to a specific department, put the department name on the line above the private bag:

Department of Consumer and Food Sciences
University of Pretoria
Private Bag X20
Hatfield
0028

A common mistake is to use 0002, which is central Pretoria, or 0083, which is the Hatfield suburb’s street code. Neither is UP’s private bag code. The private bag code is 0028.

A private bag is a bulk postal service, so it takes ordinary post but not couriers. For a courier delivery, use the physical address at the corner of Lynnwood Road and Roper Street and name the department and building.

Reaching the department

Consumer and Food Sciences sits in the Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences, which has its own undergraduate help address: nas.undergradhelp@up.ac.za.

That is the right route for an undergraduate query about the department, and it is better than the general Student Service Centre because it reaches people who know the faculty’s programmes.

UP lists a number of individual staff members with direct lines and personal mailboxes against each faculty. We do not republish those. They change as people move roles, and a query sent to someone who has left goes nowhere. Use the faculty and role addresses instead.

Note that UPOnline is a separate call centre on its own number, for students registered on online programmes rather than contact programmes. Using the wrong one means a transfer.

UP asks that when emailing a faculty you put a short description in the subject line together with your name, degree and student number. That advice is given for one faculty specifically but applies sensibly to all of them.

Emergency and crisis numbers

UP Counselling Careline, toll-free0800 747 747
Crisis Service, toll-free0800 006 428
24-hour Operations012 420 2310

Two of these are toll-free and worth saving. The Counselling Careline and the Crisis Service cost nothing to call, which matters for a student in difficulty.

012 420 2310 is the 24-hour operations number, and it is the one that answers outside the Student Service Centre’s 08:00 to 16:00 weekday hours.

UP also runs an ethics hotline, reachable through its website, for reporting misconduct.

Funding queries go somewhere else entirely

Worth knowing because it is not a phone number at all.

UP routes NSFAS and UP funding queries through SMAX, a system on the student portal, rather than through the Student Service Centre. Student account queries and payment queries are different again: accounts go to ssc@up.ac.za and payments to payments@up.ac.za.

Academic advising is also separate, with one route for currently registered students and another for prospective students, both published on the UP site.
