Three campuses, all in Gauteng

Unisa publishes campus maps for three campuses, and they are different places serving different purposes.

Muckleneuk, on Preller Street in Pretoria, is the seat of the university and the address most people mean by “Unisa”.

The Science Campus is in Florida, on the West Rand, at the corner of Christiaan de Wet Road and Pioneer Avenue. It is roughly an hour from Muckleneuk in traffic, so confirm which campus you need before travelling.

Sunnyside is also in Pretoria, at the corner of Justice Mohammed and Steve Biko streets.

Unisa provides a downloadable map in PDF for each, plus a Directions to Unisa page. Download the map before you go. These are large sites and the building you want is not necessarily near the entrance.

Regional centres are the closer option

Unisa is a distance-learning university with students across the country, so most people do not need to travel to Pretoria at all.

It groups its regional centres into seven regions: Eastern Cape, Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Midlands, North Eastern, Western Cape, and an Ethiopia Region, which is outside South Africa.

Unisa lists what a regional centre is for: getting advice, meeting other students, using Unisa services, speaking to counsellors, using its Academic Literacies Services, and using a computer. It adds a caveat worth noting, that there are only a limited number of computers available at the regional centres.

So do not plan to write an assignment at one without checking first. Phone the toll-free line and ask what your nearest centre can actually do before making the trip.

The phone line runs late and on Saturdays

The Unisa Student Communication Centre is open 08:00 to 19:00 Monday to Friday and 08:00 to 14:00 on Saturdays, South African time.

That is a wider window than most institutions offer, and it suits a university whose students are largely working adults. The number is toll-free, so calling costs nothing from a South African line.

Unisa still publishes a fax number, 012 429 4150, alongside it.

One caution about email. The address enquire@unisa.ac.za is published specifically for misdirected enquiries and FAQs, not as a general contact address. Unisa’s own routing preference is the enquiry form on its contact page, where you select a category first.

Make sure you want Unisa

“University of South Africa” is the full name of Unisa specifically. It is not a general term for South African universities, and searches for a university address or a university number often land here by mistake.

If you are looking for a different institution, the numbers on this page will not help you, and the Unisa call centre cannot answer for another university’s applications, fees or results.

Unisa is distinctive in one way that matters for this: it is a distance-learning institution, so there is no campus you attend for lectures in the ordinary sense. If you are expecting to be on campus daily, you are probably thinking of a different university.

Other published routes

Unisa separates several functions onto their own pages rather than through the main line.

• Each college publishes its own Contact the College page, including Accounting Sciences, Agriculture and Environmental Sciences, Economic and Management Sciences, Education, Human Sciences, Law, Science Engineering and Technology, and the College of Graduate Studies.
• Alumni Relations has its own contact page.
• Internationalisation and Partnerships has a separate contact page, as does the conference facilities service.
• Vacancies and tenders are published under their own headings rather than handled by the call centre.

For anything academic and specific, the college page is usually the better route than the general line.

Before you call or visit

Have your student number. If you are not yet a student, have your identity number and any application reference.

Check your myLife email account before phoning. Unisa uses it for official correspondence, and the answer is often already sitting there.

If you plan to visit, confirm the campus and download its map, and check whether your matter can be handled at a regional centre instead.

Bear in mind that one page we used carries a last-modified date of 2023, so confirm an address on the call if you are travelling a long way.
