The distance learning contact page calls the WhatsApp number a “Self Help” line, and asks that every email include your name, surname, student number or ID number and contact details. The contact page also lists a Complaints and Thoughts SMS line for each campus: Mahikeng 34151, Potchefstroom 31750, Vanderbijlpark 41617 and Open Distance Learning 33139.

NWU finance department contact details

NWU has no single finance department line. Student Accounts and Bursaries at each campus handles accounts, quotations and bursaries. For an account enquiry, NWU tells students to log on to the Student Portal and open My Finances, then Account Information or My Statement. To log a request, use the Student Helpdesk in the portal menu. If you need to speak to Student Accounts and Bursaries, these are the campus lines:

Admissions and student support

NWU is a public university with campuses in Mahikeng, Potchefstroom and Vanderbijlpark, plus distance learning. Most student self-service runs through the Student Portal, which is also where account questions are answered. NWU warns that it does not use third-party agents to help with admission or registration, and that only its Admissions Office can help with application acceptance or registration. Be wary of anyone offering a residence place for a fee, and always use the official NWU bank accounts.

When a query needs more than the portal, start with the Student Helpdesk in the Student Portal or the call centre on 0860 169 698, and keep the reference you are given. For a fee or bursary problem, contact Student Accounts and Bursaries at your campus using the tables above. Report fraud, bribery or corruption confidentially to NWU’s independent hotline run by Whistle Blowers (Pty) Ltd: 0800 666 361 or nwu@whistleblowing.co.za. If a complaint about a public university is still unresolved, the Department of Higher Education and Training’s call centre is 0800 87 2222.

NWU APS score requirements

NWU’s APS Calculator, at studies.nwu.ac.za/studies/aps-calculator, works out your Admission Point Score from NSC, ISC or SACAI results, scoring each subject by its percentage band (from 90 to 100% down to 0 to 29%). The minimum APS differs per programme, including IT, and NWU does not publish one university-wide minimum on the calculator page, so check the requirement for the programme you want.

If you completed the Senior Certificate before 2008 you cannot calculate an APS and must contact the admissions office, through the call centre on 0860 169 698 or studies@nwu.ac.za. Applicants with foreign qualifications need a USAf exemption certificate.

NWU spells the campus Mahikeng (formerly Mafikeng). The Mahikeng Campus switchboard is 018 389 2601, the campus is at the corner of Albert Luthuli and University Drive, Mmabatho, 2745, and its postal address is Private Bag X2046, Mmabatho, 2745. Its Complaints and Thoughts SMS line is 34151. Applications and general administration for all campuses, Mahikeng included, go through the call centre on 0860 169 698.
