NWU Contact Details
The North-West University (NWU) call centre is 0860 169 698 (0860 1MYNWU), open 08:00 to 16:30. You can also send a WhatsApp to 060 070 2606, SMS 31750 or email studies@nwu.ac.za. The call centre number is the one listed for all three campuses and for distance learning. The distance learning contact page calls the WhatsApp number a “Self Help” line, and asks that every email include your name, surname, student number or ID number and contact details. The contact page also lists a Complaints and Thoughts SMS line for each campus: Mahikeng 34151, Potchefstroom 31750, Vanderbijlpark 41617 and Open Distance Learning 33139.
Admissions and student support
NWU is a public university with campuses in Mahikeng, Potchefstroom and Vanderbijlpark, plus distance learning. Most student self-service runs through the Student Portal, which is also where account questions are answered.
For an account enquiry, NWU tells students to log on to the Student Portal and open My Finances, then Account Information or My Statement. To log a request, use the Student Helpdesk in the portal menu. If you need to speak to Student Accounts and Bursaries, these are the campus lines:

NWU warns that it does not use third-party agents to help with admission or registration, and that only its Admissions Office can help with application acceptance or registration. Be wary of anyone offering a residence place for a fee, and always use the official NWU bank accounts.

The call centre hours of 08:00 to 16:30 are those given on the distance learning contact page. NWU does not publish separate hours for the campus switchboards. Emergency, protection services and IT support numbers are on the university’s Emergency contact details page.
Escalation routes
- Start with the Student Helpdesk in the Student Portal or the call centre, and keep the reference you are given.
- For a fee or bursary problem, contact Student Accounts and Bursaries at your campus using the table above.
- Report fraud, bribery or corruption confidentially to NWU’s independent hotline run by Whistle Blowers (Pty) Ltd: 0800 666 361 or nwu@whistleblowing.co.za.
- If a complaint about a public university is still unresolved, the Department of Higher Education and Training’s call centre is 0800 87 2222.
