TV Licence Contact Details

Your TV licence number is your nine-digit TV licence account number, the reference the SABC asks for on every payment. If you cannot find it, call the SABC TV Licences Customer Service Centre on (011) 330 9555, or email tvlic.info@sabc.co.za. The SABC asks you to include your correct ID number, your account number or both, so give your ID number if the account number is missing. To register on pay.tvlic.co.za you can identify yourself with a South African ID number, a TV licence account number, a passport number or a business registration number, so the account number is not the only way in. When you renew, the SABC asks you to present your existing licence, a copy of it or your renewal notice. Renewal notices go out about two months before the licence year ends. The SABC switchboard, 011 714 9111, is for the broadcaster generally, and the SABC’s own contact page sends TV licence queries to the (011) 330 9555 line.

Services and responsibilities

Under the Broadcasting Act, anyone who owns or uses a device that can receive a broadcast TV signal needs a TV licence, whether or not the set is actually used. One domestic licence covers a household’s sets at the registered home. The annual fee is R265 for domestic, business, dealer, lessor and mobile licences, and R74 for a concessionary licence. Concessions are for people aged 70 or older and for recipients of an old-age, disability or war veteran’s grant. First-time applicants pay the full R265 upfront. Renewals may be paid at R28 a month, which works out to R336 a year. Late payment adds a penalty of 10% a month, up to 100% a year.

Overdue accounts are handed over for collection. The SABC names the agencies on its collection panel as Hahn Collections Debt Recovery (010 510 0694), VVM (087 740 1212 or 087 740 1213) and NuDebt Management (087 283 9721). A demand from any other collector should be checked with (011) 330 9555 before you pay.

Address changes, cancellations and other formal notices go by post to The Manager, Television Licences, SABC, Private Bag X60, Auckland Park 2006, or freepost JHZ153K, SABC, Auckland Park. The Customer Service Centre on (011) 330 9555 works weekdays 08:00 to 18:00 and Saturdays 08:00 to 13:00, and is closed on Sundays and public holidays.

You can pay at your bank’s ATMs or branches, at the Post Office, at retailers including Game, Makro and Incredible Connection, and at Easypay and Pay@ outlets such as Pick n Pay, Checkers, PEP and SPAR. Use your TV licence account number as the reference every time. For payments by bank transfer, take the account details from the PayPoints page on tvlic.co.za itself, not from a message or a third-party website. Debit order and business licence forms are also on tvlic.co.za. The SABC must be told in writing within 30 days if you move.

Applications and escalation

1. Call or email TV Licences with your ID and account number, and note the reference you are given.
2. Put a dispute, such as a wrongly billed or duplicate account, in writing to The Manager, Television Licences, at Private Bag X60, Auckland Park 2006, and keep proof of sending.
3. If the SABC does not deal with a properly lodged complaint, you can ask the Public Protector, which investigates maladministration by state entities, on its toll-free line 0800 11 20 40.

The SABC contact page lists complaints@sabc.co.za under broadcasting complaints, so do not use it for TV licence queries. To stop paying because you no longer own a TV set, you must send the SABC a prescribed affidavit. No licence is cancelled while money is still owed on the account.
