One landline covers the whole organisation. Moonstone runs several distinct businesses under one roof, so say which one you need when the call is answered, or you will be transferred.

Note that there are two fax numbers, both unlabelled, which is unusual. If you still need to fax something, 021 883 8005 is the one listed first.

Pick the right department

Since there is no email address, the department selector on the form is what does the routing. It is the closest thing Moonstone has to a set of departmental mailboxes, and knowing the list tells you how the business is structured.

The two people most often come looking for are the first two. Regulatory Exams handles RE1 and RE5 registrations and results. Licensing handles FSCA licence applications and changes to an FSP profile.

Choosing Other because you are unsure is the slowest route. If it is about an exam, pick Regulatory Exams even if the specific question does not match the three sub-items listed.

Have your FSP number ready

The contact form has a field for an FSP number, and so does the newsletter subscription form, which asks for an FSP number or company name.

That tells you who Moonstone is set up to serve. This is a business-to-business operation aimed at licensed financial services providers, their key individuals and their representatives, rather than at members of the public.

If you are a consumer with a complaint about a financial adviser, Moonstone is not the place to send it. It provides compliance services to advisers; it does not adjudicate complaints against them. Take that to the adviser’s own firm first.

The newsletter form also requires both a landline and a cellphone number, so have both to hand if you are subscribing.

What Moonstone actually does

The name gives nothing away, and people often arrive at the number without being sure they have the right company. Moonstone Information Refinery runs four main things.

Regulatory Exam Body. It administers the RE1 and RE5 regulatory examinations, which is the part of the business with the most public contact, because everyone in the industry has to sit them.

Compliance and risk management. Compliance services covering FAIS, FICA and the National Credit Act.

Moonstone Business School of Excellence. Full qualifications, short courses, class of business training and continuous professional development.

Information Refinery. Industry newsletters and a media kit for advertisers, which is the publishing side that produces its daily financial services coverage.

It also offers Workforce Solutions, covering skills development and employment equity, and career placements.

Finding the offices

Technopark is a business park on the edge of Stellenbosch rather than an address in the town centre, so allow for that if you are driving.

Moonstone publishes map coordinates alongside the address, which is the reliable way to navigate to a unit in a business park. Phone ahead on 021 883 8000 before travelling: much of what Moonstone does, particularly exams and courses, is handled online or at booked venues rather than at reception.

There is also a separate Workforce Solutions consultation booking route on the site, so that service is by appointment rather than by walk-in.
