Head office is not where treatment happens

NRC runs dialysis clinics across the country, and head office in Illovo is an administrative address rather than a treatment centre.

For anything about your own treatment, your dialysis schedule, a missed session or a clinical question, contact the clinic where you are treated. Head office does not hold that.

NRC runs a Find a Clinic tool on its site, which attempts to detect your location. If it does not work, NRC notes that you should check your device location settings.

Use head office and the customer service mailbox for administrative matters, feedback and general enquiries about NRC or about dialysis.

Dialysis while travelling

This is the most useful thing on NRC’s contact page and it is easy to miss.

NRC offers a holiday session booking, and says that with some planning most patients on dialysis can travel for work or pleasure. The booking lets you arrange treatment away from your usual clinic.

If you are on dialysis and have been assuming you cannot travel, this is the route to ask about. Start early: it is described as needing planning, and sessions have to be arranged at the destination clinic.

Raise it through the contact form or the customer service mailbox, and give your dates and destination.

Two recently opened clinics

NRC’s site currently flags two clinics as newly open, each with its own contact number, which is unusual since most of its clinics are reached through the locator.

• BRC Qwa-Qwa, at the Old FDC Building, corner of Motloung and Setai Street, Phuthaditjhaba, Free State. Contact 067 422 9246 or 011 049 3740.
• RCH Kathu, at Lenmed Kathu Private Hospital, Frikkie Meyer Street, Kathu, Northern Cape. Contact 011 049 3780.

Both of those 011 numbers are in the same range as head office, so expect to reach a central team rather than the clinic itself.

The contact form

NRC’s form asks for your full name, contact number, email address and province, and gives you a message box limited to 300 characters.

Three hundred characters is short, roughly three sentences. Write the essentials first: who you are, which clinic, and exactly what you need. Detail can follow once someone replies.

The form also asks whether you would prefer to be contacted by email or by telephone, so choose deliberately.

Do not put medical details or an identity number into a web form. Give enough to be identified and discuss the rest on the call.

Use nrc.co.za/contact, not contact-us

A small trap worth knowing. The address nrc.co.za/contact-us returns a page-not-found error.

The working page is nrc.co.za/contact, without the “us”. The clinic finder is at nrc.co.za/find-a-clinic.

Before you get in touch

Know which clinic treats you, and have your patient reference if you have one.

Have your medical scheme name and membership number. Dialysis is a chronic benefit and the scheme’s authorisation is usually part of any discussion about treatment.

For a holiday session, have your travel dates, your destination town, and your current treatment schedule.

NRC publishes no operating hours for head office, so treat 011 726 5206 as a weekday business-hours number. Anything urgent and clinical belongs with your treating clinic or with emergency services, not with head office.
