Prof Kalla Contact Details

Two South African professors are commonly meant by the name Prof Kalla, and they worked in different fields and different cities. Prof Ismail Kalla is listed by the Lenmed hospital group as an intensivist physician at Ahmed Kathrada Private Hospital, on +27 87 087 8582; the hospital switchboard is +27 87 087 0642. Prof Asgar Ali Kalla led rheumatology at the University of Cape Town and died on 4 April 2026. We read this on lenmed.co.za and uct.ac.za on 24 September 2026.

Both numbers above come from Lenmed’s own site, which is the reason they are here. The group publishes the first one against his entry in its directory of doctors, so it is a practice line opened deliberately for patients, not a private number lifted off a listing site.

Lenmed publishes no email address on that entry. If the practice line does not answer, the hospital switchboard will take a message for the rooms, which is the normal route in a private hospital and faster than trying to find an address that was never published.

Prof Asgar Ali Kalla, University of Cape Town

If the Prof Kalla you are looking for is the rheumatologist, there is something you need to know before you spend any more time on it.

The University of Cape Town’s Faculty of Health Sciences published a memorial notice for Professor Emeritus Asgar Ali Kalla, who graduated from the university in 1975, headed rheumatology in its Department of Medicine from 2000 to 2017 and was later made professor emeritus. The notice records that he died on Saturday, 4 April 2026.

Third party medical directories still carry an entry for his practice in Observatory, Cape Town, and a search will surface it. Those entries are stale. Nothing on this page should be used to contact that practice.

Enquiries that genuinely belong to the university, about research, teaching, a rheumatology referral or an academic record, go to the faculty rather than to a former staff member. The Faculty of Health Sciences is in the Barnard Fuller Building, Anzio Road, Observatory, Cape Town, and the university number published with the notice is +27 21 650 9111.

Making sure you have the right professor

Kalla is not a rare surname in South African medicine and academia, and a search for the title and the surname alone will mix several people together. Before you call, check which one you actually want.

• The field. Intensive care and respiratory medicine in Johannesburg points to one person. Rheumatology in Cape Town points to another.
• The institution. A hospital group, a university and a private practice are three different organisations with three different switchboards, and a doctor may appear at more than one of them.
• The register. Registration as a medical practitioner in South Africa is verifiable on the public register kept by the Health Professions Council of South Africa, which is the way to confirm that a practitioner is who a directory says they are.
• The referral. A specialist consultation normally starts with a referral from your doctor, and the referring practice will usually have the current rooms details for the specialist they are sending you to.

No cellphone number, no home address and no private mailbox for any individual appears here. What appears is what an organisation has put on its own site for the public to use.

That distinction matters most in medicine, where the people searching are often anxious and will act on the first number they see. A private line published in a place that ranks well is a gift to anyone who wants to pose as a doctor’s rooms, take a deposit for an appointment that does not exist, and disappear. A hospital switchboard cannot be used that way, which is part of why it is the number we give.

One practical consequence: a medical practice will not ask you to pay a consultation deposit into an account given to you over the phone by someone who called you. If that happens, put the phone down and call the hospital switchboard on 087 087 0642 yourself.
