What you need before contacting

  • Your account number and ID number
  • A short, factual summary of what went wrong, with dates and amounts
  • Copies of letters, emails, statements and any reference numbers

Step-by-step contact process

  1. Lodge the complaint with your bank’s complaints line or mailbox above and keep the reference number.
  2. Give the bank a chance to resolve it. The NFO only takes a complaint once the bank has had that chance.
  3. If it is still unresolved, send the NFO the bank’s name, your account number, a short factual summary and copies of the correspondence.
  4. Track your case on the NFO website.

Escalation route

The National Financial Ombud Scheme South Africa handles banking complaints. Older references to a separate “Ombudsman for Banking Services” are out of date. Contact the NFO on 0860 800 900, WhatsApp 076 574 8055, info@nfosa.co.za or its online complaint form. The service is free, and you can complain in any official language, in writing, by phone or as a walk-in. If you go to the NFO without first lodging the complaint with the bank, the NFO gives the bank 21 working days to respond.

More complaint routes are in our complaints hub.
