What to do, in order

Two complaints run in parallel and they do different things.

• Photograph the item, the packaging, the batch code and the expiry date before handling it further.
• Report to the manufacturer, which can trace the batch and recall it if there is a wider problem.
• Report to the municipal environmental health department, which has statutory powers to inspect and act, and which the manufacturer does not control.
• Get medical attention if anyone is ill or injured, and keep the records; those are what any claim rests on.

Recalls and expectations

A recall applies to specific batch numbers rather than to a product in general, so check the code on your pack rather than assuming. Return recalled stock to the retailer for a refund.
