DUT is explicit that queries should go to Student Housing reception rather than to the managers. We list the manager numbers because DUT publishes them, but the reception addresses are the route the university asks you to use, and they are answered by more than one person.
We do not republish the managers’ names, which appear alongside those numbers. Ask for the Student Housing Manager by title.
Midlands housing uses a Durban code
This catches people out and looks like a mistake, so it is worth stating plainly.
Pietermaritzburg is in the 033 dialling area, and DUT’s Midlands switchboard is 033 845 8800. But the Midlands student housing numbers are all on 031, the Durban code: 031 373 6059 and 031 373 5453.
That is what DUT publishes and it is not a typo on our part. Housing appears to be administered centrally from Durban for both campuses. Dial them as 031 numbers.
Note too that 031 373 6059 is listed twice: once as the Midlands manager’s line and once as a first-year Midlands number. It is one line serving both.
Before you ask about a room
DUT publishes its accommodation capacity, and the numbers explain why residence places are hard to get.
| DUT-owned beds | 2,253 |
|---|---|
| Leased residence beds | 16,035 |
| Private accommodation beds | 2,365 |
| DUT-owned residences, Durban | 7 |
| Leased residences, Durban | 65 |
| DUT-owned residences, Midlands | 5 |
| Leased residences, Midlands | 52 |
The great majority of beds are in leased residences rather than university-owned ones. So the building you are placed in is often not owned by DUT, and day-to-day problems there may involve a landlord as well as the university. Report them to Student Housing anyway; they hold the lease.
Private accommodation providers
If you own property and want to house DUT students, there is a formal accreditation route: DUT publishes guidelines for accreditation as an off-campus accommodation provider, downloadable from its student housing page.
Read DUT’s own warning before you invest in it. The university states that private accommodation is not guaranteed upfront: it comes into operation only once all in-source and leased residences are fully occupied. Private providers are the last option filled, not the first.
Accreditation enquiries go through the same student housing addresses above.
Fees and financial aid
DUT runs a Financial Aid Unit as a separate department under Student Services, but it does not publish a dedicated departmental telephone number or role mailbox that we could verify on its public pages.
So for a fees or funding question, use the switchboards and ask for the Financial Aid Unit: 031 373 2000 for Durban or 033 845 8800 for Pietermaritzburg, or write to info@dut.ac.za.
Before you call, check the documents DUT publishes on its own site, because most fee questions are answered there: the Fees Booklet, the NSFAS pages for new and returning students, and the “Missing Middle” application form for students who fall above the NSFAS threshold but cannot fund themselves.
Quote your student number in any fees email. Without it, an account query cannot be looked up.
Other student services
DUT groups several units under Student Services, and knowing the right one saves being transferred: the Financial Aid Unit, Student Counselling and Health, Student Housing and Residence Life, Student Governance and Development, Student Records and Sports Administration.
Student Records is the unit for transcripts and proof of registration, which is a different desk from finance and from housing.
DUT also runs Student Self Service for web registration and results, both on the web and through mobile apps, which handles most routine record requests without a phone call.
The university’s postal address is PO Box 1334, Durban, 4000.
