Preparing feeds safely

Formula is not sterile, and preparation is where most problems arise.

• Use safe water, boiled and cooled as the instructions direct, and wash and sterilise bottles and teats.
• Make feeds fresh and discard what is left after the stated time rather than reheating it.
• Never prop a bottle or leave a baby to feed alone, which risks choking.
• Check the expiry date and that the seal is intact.
