Umalusi’s number is 012 349 1510, with a toll-free line on 0800 223 680 and info@umalusi.org.za for general enquiries. The hotline address is on thehotline.co.za rather than umalusi.org.za. That is deliberate, not a red flag: it is an independent provider, so a report does not land inside the organisation it concerns.
Note the difference between two of these. Certification is about issuing a certificate. Verification is about confirming that a certificate someone has shown you is genuine, which is what employers need.
Umalusi does not take your application
This is the thing that sends people to the wrong number, so it is worth being clear about.
You do not apply to Umalusi for a replacement matric certificate. You apply through your assessment body, which for most people is their provincial education department. That body then submits an electronic request to Umalusi on your behalf.
So the number you need is usually a provincial one, not Umalusi’s.

Two provinces catch people out. North West’s exam office is in Potchefstroom, not in the provincial capital Mahikeng. Mpumalanga’s is in Middelburg, not Mbombela. Phone before travelling.

What you need, and how long it takes
Umalusi sets out the requirements, and two of them save money or trouble.
You need a certified copy of your identity document. Umalusi points out that a copy can be certified free of charge at a police station, or at an attorney’s office. Nobody should be charging you for that.
You also need proof of payment of an administration fee. The amount is set by the assessment body, not by Umalusi, and it is reviewed annually, so confirm the current figure with the province before paying.
On timing, Umalusi is explicit: a certificate cannot be issued on the same day the application is submitted. Normal processing is one to six weeks. Anyone promising a same-day matric certificate is not describing the real process.
Certificates from before November 1992
These follow a different route, and it is more flexible.
A replacement for a certificate obtained before November 1992 can be requested from the office of any Department of Education, not only the one in your own province, following the same procedure.
The difference is that the certificate is printed by the relevant assessment body rather than by Umalusi, and the processing time is shorter, at one to three weeks.
Your old certificate stops being valid
This catches people out and is worth knowing before you apply.
When a replacement is issued, the previous certificate is cancelled. If you later find the original you thought you had lost, it is invalid and cannot be used. Use the replacement.
So search properly before applying. And if an employer is verifying your qualification, they should use verification@umalusi.org.za, which checks against the current record.
