Funza Lushaka Contact Details

Funza Lushaka is the government bursary that pays for initial teacher education in exchange for teaching in a public school. The details below were read from funzalushaka.doe.gov.za on 2 September 2026.

Official contact channels

The Funza Lushaka website publishes no telephone number and no email address. It is an application portal, not a contact point – there is no bursary call centre. The scheme is administered by the Department of Basic Education, and these are the DBE numbers, read on gov.za on 24 August 2026:

The site does carry a “Mail for student” facility and a “For DBE Official use only” area, but no published address for general enquiries.

Services and responsibilities

Funza Lushaka covers tuition, accommodation, meals, books and a small allowance for students studying to teach in priority subject areas. It is not a free bursary in the ordinary sense – it carries a service obligation. A recipient must teach at a public school for the same number of years the bursary was held, and the Department places the graduate; you do not choose the school. Failing to serve converts the bursary into a repayable loan.

The site publishes an agreement form and separate information about bursary placement – read both before accepting, because the placement rules are the part most recipients are surprised by.

Office and address information

Funza Lushaka has no walk-in office. Applications, re-applications and personal-information updates all run through the portal, and universities administer the funds once a bursary is awarded – so a question about payment of your allowance is usually one for your institution’s financial aid office rather than for the DBE.

Applications and escalation

You must be 30 years or younger to apply for the first time. The site states this plainly for all first-time applicants, and it is the condition that disqualifies the most people before anything else is considered.

Applications run through the government e-Services portal in nine steps: open eservices.gov.za, register with your personal information, log in, select the Funza Lushaka Bursary Scheme from the e-Services menu, enter the OTP sent to your preferred channel, accept the terms and conditions, click the application button for the relevant year on the dashboard, complete the fields, and accept the declaration confirming what you captured.

Register on eservices.gov.za only once. If you already have an e-Gov account – for SACE registration or any other government service – log in with it rather than creating a second one, which causes duplicate records that are slow to unpick.

The cycle published on the site for the 2026 academic year opened on 7 October 2025, with new applications closing on 1 February 2026 and re-applications for existing bursars closing earlier, on 30 November 2025. Returning bursars close before new applicants, not after – a trap for anyone assuming one deadline covers both. Check the current cycle dates on the site before applying, as they are set each year.

Chase a stalled application on the DBE numbers with your ID number and application reference. Beyond the department, maladministration by a public body goes to the Public Protector. Nobody may charge you a fee to apply for or secure a Funza Lushaka bursary – applications are free and are made only through the government portal.
