The Kimberley Master’s Office has one telephone number that does double duty: the same line, 053 831 1942, serves both the general switchboard and Guardian’s Fund enquiries. That is unusual among the Master’s offices, most of which publish a separate Guardian’s Fund line, and it matters practically because it means you should say at the outset which division you need rather than assuming the number has already routed you. The office also relocated. Since 29 May 2024 it has operated from Don Pablo Office Park on George Street, not its former premises, so older listings and printed correspondence may send you to the wrong building. Kimberley is one of the offices that reopens after lunch, which gives you a second window in the day that most Master’s offices do not offer.
Official branch contact route
- Telephone (switchboard and Guardian’s Fund): 053 831 1942
- Office email: [email protected]
- Postal address: Private Bag X5015, Kimberley, 8300
The office mailbox is worth using in preference to a personal address. Because it is a shared office inbox rather than one official’s, correspondence sent there survives staff changes and leave, which matters on a matter that runs for months.
Location and operating information
- Physical address: Don Pablo Office Park, 73 George Street, Kimberley, 8301, occupied from 29 May 2024
- Morning session: 07h45 to 13h00
- Afternoon session: 13h45 to 16h00
Unlike the offices that close to the public at 13h00 for the rest of the day, Kimberley reopens at 13h45 without restricting the afternoon to urgent matters or appointments. If you cannot get there in the morning, the afternoon session is a genuine alternative rather than a concession. Allow for the 45-minute closure in the middle of the day when planning a trip that involves travel from outside the city.
Services at this location
Kimberley is the Master’s Office for the Northern Cape and handles the branch’s full range of work: deceased estates, insolvent estates and liquidations, the registration and supervision of trusts under the Trust Property Control Act, curators and tutors, and the Guardian’s Fund, which holds money for minors, people lacking legal capacity and heirs who cannot be traced. Whether this is the correct office for a deceased estate depends on where the deceased was living in the twelve months before death, not on where the family lives now. Documents for terminated or dormant trusts are the exception and go to the central mailboxes [email protected] and [email protected] rather than here.
Parent organisation and escalation
The office is part of the Master of the High Court within the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development. Escalate in sequence and only within this office first: Assistant Master, then Deputy Master, then Head of Office. The Office of the Chief Master on 012 406 4804 is the step after those three, not before them. Where the distance to Kimberley is prohibitive, any Magistrate’s Office can act as a service point for the Master, a designation in place since 5 December 2002.
