The court serves the O.R. Tambo district and handles criminal and civil cases, maintenance, domestic violence, childrens court and child justice matters, sexual offences and small claims. Several branch courts in the district, including Bityi, are administered from Mthatha but answer on their own numbers.

The court is at the corner of Leeds and Owen Streets, Mthatha, with post to Private Bag X5008. The correct postal code is 5099. The departmental listing prints the street address code as 50999, which is five digits and a typing error, while its own postal address for the same office gives 5099.
Applications and escalation
The after hours number applies to domestic violence protection order applications when the court is closed. Umtata is the former name of Mthatha and still appears in the departmental record, so both names refer to the same court.
