Driving to Namibia

This is the most common reason South Africans need the mission, and most of the problems happen at the border rather than in advance.

• Take the vehicle registration papers in your name. If the car is financed or rented, you need written authorisation from the bank or rental company, and it must be current.
• Expect a cross-border charge payable at entry, and carry the means to pay it.
• A child crossing needs an unabridged birth certificate, and consent from an absent parent.
• Check passport validity well beyond your return date, and that you have blank pages.

While you are there

South African emergency numbers do not work in Namibia. Confirm local emergency numbers on arrival, and check what your medical and travel insurance covers outside South Africa, including repatriation. Distances between towns are very long and fuel stops are sparse; plan fuel and water rather than assuming.
