There is no UK embassy in Cape Town, or anywhere in South Africa. South Africa is a Commonwealth member, so the United Kingdom is represented by a High Commission in Pretoria and a Consulate-General in Cape Town. Neither post publishes a telephone number: emergencies and enquiries go through the FCDO’s online contact form at contact.service.csd.fcdo.gov.uk, and the Consulate-General’s address is 15th Floor, Norton Rose House, 8 Riebeek Street, Foreshore, Cape Town, Western Cape, 8000.

Why there is no UK embassy in South Africa
South Africa is a Commonwealth member, so the United Kingdom is represented by a High Commission rather than an embassy. Sites calling themselves the UK embassy in Cape Town are third-party pages; the real UK post in the city is the British Consulate-General on the Foreshore.
Reaching the British High Commission or Consulate-General by phone
The FCDO no longer publishes direct switchboard numbers for its posts. Both the Pretoria and Cape Town listings say the same thing: to call in an emergency or send an enquiry, use the online contact form for that post on contact.service.csd.fcdo.gov.uk. The form routes you, including to a telephone route for genuine emergencies. Any South African number presented as the British High Commission switchboard did not come from the FCDO.
Public access to embassies, high commissions and consulates is by appointment only. Do not travel to Hill Street or to the Foreshore expecting a counter.
What the High Commission will not do
This catches people out constantly. For legal reasons the UK does not carry out notarial acts in Commonwealth countries, which means the High Commission cannot certify a document as a true copy of an original, administer an oath, or take an affidavit. Use a local South African notary instead. The FCDO will issue a standard letter confirming that it does not offer these services in South Africa, which is what a foreign institution asking for consular certification usually needs to see.
Passports and emergency travel documents
- A lost, stolen, damaged or expired passport, when you cannot get a replacement in time to travel, is handled by an emergency travel document, applied for online
- For someone under 16, a parent or guardian applies on their behalf
- If you are travelling in more than three weeks, check whether an ordinary replacement passport will arrive in time first
- If you are not sure whether you are a British citizen, check that before applying, and contact the post if you believe you are eligible but have never held a British passport
When it is a real emergency
The FCDO says it prioritises emergencies and vulnerable people: someone ill, injured or the victim of a crime, or those dealing with the death of a British person in South Africa. It also publishes country-specific guidance for South Africa on the legal and prison systems, on what to do when someone dies, and specific support for survivors of rape and sexual assault. Those pages are worth finding before you need them.
One thing consular staff cannot do is get you out of a legal obligation in South Africa. They can visit, explain the system and pass messages, but they do not pay fines, post bail or interfere in a prosecution.
