Military veterans’ benefits depend on being on the official veterans database, and many who qualify were never registered. Healthcare, education support for dependants, housing assistance and burial support all flow from that verification rather than from service alone.

Registering and claiming as a military veteran
The legislation covers veterans of the statutory and non-statutory forces alike.
- Verification of status comes first, and it is what unlocks everything else.
- Gather service records, discharge documents and identity documents before applying.
- Dependants may qualify for education support, which is applied for separately.
- Nobody may charge a fee to register a veteran or process a benefit.
Joining the SANDF
Defence force recruitment is advertised publicly and applying is free. Intakes have closing dates, medical and fitness requirements and security vetting. Anyone selling a place, a uniform deposit or a training slot is running a fraud.
Verify any letter or instruction by phoning the unit or office on a number you looked up yourself. Pietermaritzburg is on the 033 code.
