Dr India Butler is a physician sub-specialising in geriatric medicine, with rooms in Parktown, Johannesburg. Geriatrics is one of the rarest specialities in South Africa – there are only a handful of registered geriatricians in the country – so this is a practice people travel to rather than one they find locally.
Official contact channels
- Rooms: 011 482 1958. Mediclinic prints the digits unspaced as 011 4821958; it is the same number.
- Website: dgmc.co.za, the Wits University Donald Gordon Medical Centre, where the practice is based.
- Mediclinic emergency number: 084 124, for emergencies only.
The profile also carries an 086 665 4889 number with no label, printed directly beneath the telephone number. An unlabelled 086 number published beside a phone number is almost always a fax line, so it is not listed above as a way to reach the practice. Use 011 482 1958 to call.
What this organisation provides
- Geriatric medicine – the holistic medical care of older people, treating the interaction between several conditions rather than each one in isolation.
- Dementia diagnosis and management, which is listed among the core competencies. A formal diagnosis matters practically as well as medically, because it affects driving, financial capacity and power of attorney.
- Complex multi-morbidity and frailty – the situation where a patient has several chronic conditions whose treatments conflict.
- Polypharmacy reduction – deliberately reducing the number of medicines an older patient takes. Older people are frequently on a dozen or more medicines prescribed by different doctors, and the interactions cause falls, confusion and hospital admissions.
- Peri-operative care of the elderly – assessing and managing an older patient around surgery, where the risk calculation differs from a younger one.
- Preventative medicine and wellness promotion.
- Qualifications published by Mediclinic: MBChB, University of Cape Town, 2004; Diploma in HIV Management (SA), 2009; FCP (SA), Colleges of Medicine, 2011; Certificate in Geriatric Medicine, Colleges of Medicine, 2013.
Bring every medicine the patient takes to the first appointment, including over-the-counter remedies and supplements, in their original boxes. For a polypharmacy review that is the single most useful thing you can do, and a written list is a poor substitute.

Support and escalation routes
- A referral letter from the GP or treating specialist, plus recent blood results and scan reports, prevents repeat testing that older patients tolerate poorly.
- Dementia is not on the chronic disease list of Prescribed Minimum Benefits, which surprises many families. Several conditions that accompany it – hypertension, diabetes, cardiac failure, Parkinson’s disease and epilepsy – are, so the funding position is usually mixed rather than all or nothing. Ask the scheme in writing which components it will fund.
- Frail care and long-term nursing care are generally not covered by medical schemes at all, and are paid privately or through a dedicated policy. Establish this early rather than at the point of admission.
- Scheme disputes and PMB refusals go to the Council for Medical Schemes after the scheme’s internal appeal.
- Complaints about professional conduct or standard of care go to the Health Professions Council of South Africa on 012 389 9300.
- Suspected abuse or neglect of an older person, including financial abuse, is reportable under the Older Persons Act to the Department of Social Development, and to the South African Police Service on 10111 where a crime is involved.
