The public hospital in Sasolburg is now named Fezi Ngubentombi District Hospital. It was previously Metsimaholo Hospital, also listed simply as Sasolburg Hospital, and was renamed after a former Free State health MEC. All three names refer to the same facility.
Be careful with the numbers here. The Free State Department of Health publishes two different telephone numbers for this hospital in two of its own documents, and both documents date from 2011 and 2012, before the rename. They are set out below with their sources, but the provincial help-line is the route that is current.
Official contact channels
- Free State health help-line: 0800 535 554
- Ambulance and emergency medical services: 10177
- Office of the HOD: 051 408 1107 or 051 408 1531, sechod@fshealth.gov.za
- Office of the MEC: 051 408 1105 or 051 408 1812, secmec@fshealth.gov.za
- Hospital number published by the department in 2011: 016 976 0270
- Hospital number published by the department in 2012: 016 970 9400
Try the 2012 number first and the 2011 number second, and fall back to the provincial help-line if neither answers. Do not assume a hospital has closed because an old departmental number rings out; provincial contact lists in South Africa are frequently a decade behind the switchboards they describe.
What this organisation provides
- A district-level public hospital serving the Metsimaholo area of the Fezile Dabi District
- Casualty and outpatient services
- General, medical and surgical wards, and a theatre
- Orthopaedics, gynaecology and paediatrics
- Antenatal and maternity services
- X-rays and a step-down facility
The step-down facility is worth knowing about. It takes patients who no longer need acute care but are not ready to go home, which is often where a family is told a relative is being moved to. It is a transfer within the same hospital service, not a discharge.
Address and operating information
- Physical address as published by the department: 8 Van Vollenhoven Street, Sasolburg
- Some listings give the street as Langehoven Street; confirm on the phone before travelling
- Postal address: Private Bag X2017, Sasolburg, 9570
- Falls in the Fezile Dabi District of the Free State
- Casualty operates continuously; outpatient clinics work to booked times
- A separate private hospital also operates in the Sasolburg area and is not this facility
As a district hospital, this is the level that takes walk-ins and referrals from clinics. Cases needing specialist care are referred upward to regional and tertiary hospitals in the province rather than treated here.
Support and escalation routes
- Start with the hospital, then the provincial help-line on 0800 535 554
- Written complaints can go to the Office of the HOD at sechod@fshealth.gov.za
- Provincial head office: Bophelo House, cnr Harvey and Charlotte Maxeke Street, Bloemfontein, 9301
- Complaints about the standard of care go to the Office of Health Standards Compliance and the Health Ombud
- Conduct by a named practitioner is for the HPCSA or the South African Nursing Council
- The province also publishes a Health Ombudsperson function of its own
Put a complaint in writing and keep a copy with dates and names. Verbal complaints at a busy district hospital rarely survive a shift change, and both the provincial office and the national Health Ombud will ask what the hospital was told and when.
