A locksmith is going to have access to your home and, briefly, to how its locks work. That makes verification more important here than with almost any other trade, and it is the one step people skip when they are standing outside at night.

Check before the work starts

• Ask for a fixed quote before anyone touches the lock, including the call-out fee and the after-hours surcharge. The commonest complaint is a modest quote by phone and a very different invoice afterwards.
• Ask whether the lock will be picked or drilled. Drilling means buying a replacement, which is where the cost sits.
• Ask for identification and a business name, and check the vehicle and invoice carry the same name.
• Expect to prove the property is yours. A locksmith who opens a door for anyone who asks will do the same for someone at your door.

Pay by card or EFT to a business account, and keep the invoice. A cash-only trader leaves you with nothing to take to an ombud or an insurer.

After a burglary or a lost key

Two things are easy to get wrong. Report a burglary to the police and get the case number before repairs begin, because most insurers require it. And if keys were lost or stolen rather than merely locked inside, change the lock rather than opening it; a copied key is still out there.
