Check the edition number before you buy or sell a textbook. Prescribed lists change by edition, and a cheaper previous edition often has different page numbering, renumbered exercises and, in law and accounting, superseded content.

Buying textbooks without losing money

• Work from the ISBN, not the title. Two books can share a title and be different products.
• Wait for the lecturer to confirm the prescribed list where you can. Faculty lists published in advance are sometimes revised.
• Check whether an access code is required. A used copy usually has a code that has already been redeemed, which makes it useless for the online component.
• Keep the receipt and ask about the returns window before opening shrink wrap.

The second-hand textbook scam

It runs on student groups every February. A seller lists a hard-to-find prescribed title below market price, asks for an EFT, and disappears. The books are expensive enough to make it worth their while and the buyer is usually under time pressure.

Meet in person on campus and pay on collection. If you must buy remotely, pay by a method with a dispute route, never an EFT to a stranger. A seller who will not meet, will not take a card, and pushes urgency is telling you what they are.
