What this regulator handles

Registration with the HPCSA is a legal prerequisite to practise a registrable health profession, under section 17(1) of the Health Professions Act.

  • Registration categories are Student, Intern, Community Service, Independent Practitioner and Specialist.
  • Holders of foreign (non-prescribed) qualifications register under section 25.
  • Students must register within 4 months of enrolling at an accredited institution, or pay a penalty for each month they are late.
  • Registration can be suspended or removed if a practitioner fails to tell the registrar about profile changes, such as a new address, within three months.

Members of the public can check whether a practitioner is registered through the Find a Practitioner search.
