Being accepted is not being registered, and an unregistered student is not a student. Acceptance is offered for a limited period and lapses if you do not register in the window, which is a separate step with its own deadline and its own fee.

What blocks registration

Two things stop students at the door, and both can be dealt with if raised early.

• An outstanding balance from the previous year. Ask about payment arrangements before the registration period rather than during it.
• Academic exclusion after failing to meet the required progress. This is appealable, with a deadline, and the appeal must address why the failure happened and what has changed.
• Funding not yet confirmed. NSFAS decisions and payments are frequently late, so do not sign commitments that assume the money has arrived.
• Outstanding documents. Certified copies and results are the usual culprits.

If you are excluded

Appeal in writing within the stated period and keep a copy. Get supporting documentation for illness, bereavement or financial hardship, and ask what support was available that you did not use, since appeal committees look for that.

Applying to a public university and to NSFAS is free, and no agent can secure registration, funding or an appeal outcome. Pay only into the institution’s published account using your student number as the reference. Durban is on the 031 code. Verified 26 August 2026.
