The HPCSA is the Health Professions Council of South Africa, the statutory body that registers health practitioners across 12 professional boards, from medical and dental through psychology, physiotherapy, radiography, optometry, emergency care, dietetics, occupational therapy, speech-language and hearing, environmental health, medical technology and dental assisting.
Is there an HPCSA WhatsApp number?
No. There is no WhatsApp contact number anywhere on the HPCSA site. The WhatsApp icons you see on its pages are share buttons that pass a link to your own contacts, not a line into the council.
What the council does offer instead is a self-service portal at hpcsaonline.custhelp.com for logging and tracking queries, an AI chat assistant on the website, and the telephone number and mailboxes above. If somebody sends you a “HPCSA WhatsApp” number, particularly one asking for a payment to fix a registration, treat it as a scam and confirm on 012 338 9300.
Your HPCSA registration number
Every registered practitioner has an HPCSA registration number, and it is the reference the council works from. Two practical points from its own pages:
- When you pay annual fees or any other amount, include your HPCSA registration number as the deposit reference. Payments without it are hard to allocate.
- Quote it in any email or portal query, together with your professional board, so the query reaches the right registration team.
To check a practitioner’s registration, the HPCSA home page carries a “Search / Verify Practitioner” tab. That is the authoritative route: a practice number on a letterhead is not proof that a person’s registration is currently active.
Certificates of status
Practitioners emigrating or registering abroad usually need a certificate of status, and the HPCSA is unusually specific about how to ask for one:
- Send a written request through the online portal, or by email to hpcsacgs@hpcsa.co.za, with proof of payment and full details of where the certificate must be sent.
- The council states that the certificate of status team only has access to that mailbox, so requests sent to any other address will not be seen.
- Your registration must be active and up to date; limited or erased registrations are treated differently.
- An affidavit is required confirming that no criminal or unprofessional conduct proceedings are pending against you.
- Courier delivery costs R153 within South Africa and R6,748 overseas including VAT, with overseas delivery taking roughly 7 to 10 days. Without a courier fee the certificate is sent by ordinary means, and it can be sent electronically where the receiving authority accepts that.
Getting through
- Log the query on hpcsaonline.custhelp.com first. It gives you a reference you can quote, which a phone call does not.
- Have your registration number, ID number and professional board ready before you call.
- Send each request to the one mailbox that handles it. The council says outright that its certificate of status team cannot see mail sent elsewhere, and the same logic applies to the scope-of-practice and PAIA mailboxes.
- Call inside working hours. The switchboard closes at 16:30 on Monday to Thursday and 15:30 on Friday, and there is no weekend or public holiday cover.
- Keep proof of payment for anything you pay, with your registration number as the reference.
What else the site handles
The home page groups the things people most often need into four tabs: legislation, the PAIA and POPIA manuals, lodging a complaint, and searching or verifying a practitioner. Alongside those, the site covers registration requirements, maintenance of registration, year-end registration, CPD, scope of professions and practices, fitness to practise, business practice, certificates by the registrar, the inspectorate, statistics and careers.
Complaints about a practitioner are lodged through the complaints route on the site rather than by phoning the switchboard, and access to records goes to the PAIA mailbox above.
