The high court at Grahamstown is the Eastern Cape Division of the High Court, and the Office of the Chief Justice now records it under the town name Makhanda.
Official contact channels
- Court manager office: 046 603 5009
Services and responsibilities
This is the main seat of the Eastern Cape Division. Three local divisions sit under it, at Bhisho, Mthatha and Gqeberha, along with a circuit court at East London. A high court hears serious criminal matters, high value civil claims, divorces and appeals from magistrate courts, none of which a magistrate court can deal with.
Office and address information
The court is at 104 to 106 High Street, Makhanda, 6140, with post to Private Bag X1011, Makhanda, 6139. The street and postal codes differ by one.
Applications and escalation
The Office of the Chief Justice publishes the court manager as a named official with a personal work mailbox, which is not reproduced here. Use the telephone number above. The magistrate court in the same town, filed under Makhanda, is a separate court on 046 622 7303.
