An NSFAS appeal is a request to reconsider a decision not to award funding, and it is lodged through your myNSFAS profile rather than by phone. There is a strict 30 day deadline, and several categories of student are not permitted to appeal at all.

Task scope

This covers appealing a rejected NSFAS application or the withdrawal of funding for a continuing student. It does not cover payment or balance queries, which use a different line, and it does not cover registration record problems, which are the institution responsibility rather than the NSFAS one.

Route

Requirements

A student whose application for financial aid was rejected, or a continuing student whose funding was withdrawn, may appeal, and only students who actually applied to NSFAS may do so. You must submit within 30 days of receiving your application results, and NSFAS states that appeal decisions are subject to budget availability, so a valid appeal is not a guarantee of funding. Several groups are barred from appealing: students registered for a qualification NSFAS does not fund, students who have reached N plus 2, or N plus 3 for students with disabilities, unless they are final year students who have successfully submitted a propensity letter completed by the institution, and gap year students previously denied funding for not meeting the academic eligibility criteria.

Steps

Log in to your myNSFAS profile and provide the information requested in the appeal application, within 30 days of the results. If you are a final year student appealing beyond the N plus rule, obtain the propensity form from your institution first, since NSFAS publishes separate propensity forms for university and for TVET students and the institution must complete it. Keep the reference and use the WhatsApp line or the general mailbox to check progress rather than resubmitting.

Escalation

One exclusion sends students to the wrong place more than any other: if your institution has not submitted your registration record to NSFAS, or submitted an incorrect one, NSFAS states that those enquiries must be directed to the institution and not to NSFAS. Appealing will not fix a missing registration record. For payment and balance disputes use the account enquiries line rather than the appeals process, and note that 08000 67327 is published for payments and balances, not for appeals. NSFAS also publishes a whistleblowing mailbox at [email protected] for reporting fraud, which matters because funding fraud targeting students is common.
