The head office of the Mpumalanga Department of Education is in Nelspruit, now Mbombela, at the Riverside Park government complex. It publishes a switchboard, a toll free line and two specialist help desks, and it runs four district offices that each have their own number.

The two help desks are the useful part and they are easy to miss. The exam help desk is a separate number from the switchboard, and during the matric examination period it is the line that will actually answer an examination query. Dial-a-Tutor is a subject support line for learners rather than an administrative number, so it is not the place for a query about a certificate or a placement.
A caution on the numbers printed beside the switchboard. The head office block also carries a fax number, 013 766 5577, and every district block below carries one too. Those will not ring. Only the numbers listed here as telephone numbers are voice lines.
Services and responsibilities
The department runs public schooling in the province, and most of what parents and learners need is handled at district level rather than at head office. The four districts each cover a different part of Mpumalanga, and a query about a specific school, a placement, a transfer or a teacher belongs with the district that school falls under.

Office and address information
Head office sits in the Riverside Park precinct outside the Mbombela town centre, which is where most Mpumalanga provincial departments are located, so it is a government complex rather than a single building. Two of the district offices are on the sites of former colleges of education, which is worth knowing because those campuses are still known locally by the college name rather than by the district name.
One thing to be aware of when searching. The department contact page links to a website address at mpumalanga.gov.za that no longer resolves, and the older education.mpu.gov.za domain does not resolve either. The working provincial portal is mpg.gov.za. An address that fails to load is not evidence that the department has moved, only that the link is stale.
Applications and escalation
Start at the school, then the district, then head office, and expect to be sent back down if you skip a step. Admission and placement decisions are made by the school governing body within the provincial admission policy, so a refused application is challenged first through the school and then through the district, in writing and with the refusal in hand.
Separate the provincial from the national. Curriculum, the National Senior Certificate and examination policy sit with the national Department of Basic Education, while employment of teachers, school funding, placement and the day to day running of schools sit with this provincial department. Umalusi is the quality council that certifies the National Senior Certificate, so a query about a certificate that has been issued incorrectly is different from a query about a mark. If an administrative failure persists after the district and head office have been given a fair chance, the Public Protector takes complaints about maladministration in a provincial department.
