- Get the authorisation in place before treatment starts. Oncology is authorised as a treatment plan rather than visit by visit, and a radiotherapy course is a single authorised programme. Confirm in writing what the scheme has approved and for how many fractions.
- Cancer is covered under Prescribed Minimum Benefits, so a scheme must fund diagnosis and treatment of the listed cancers to the defined level even when day-to-day benefits are exhausted, subject to protocols and designated providers. Where a scheme applies a treatment threshold or a co-payment beyond that, ask for the reason in writing – it is the point at which most oncology funding disputes turn.
