Before you book a vehicle transport
- Get the quote in writing, and check whether it is depot to depot or door to door. Those are different prices and the difference is often the argument afterwards
- Ask what the goods in transit cover is and what the excess would be. Confirm whether your own insurer covers the vehicle while it is on a truck
- Do a written condition report with photographs at handover and again at collection, dated. Without one, a transit damage claim is very hard to prove
- Empty the vehicle. Personal items in a transported car are usually excluded from cover entirely
If something goes wrong
- Raise a damage or delay claim with the depot that took the booking, in writing, quoting the job or quote number
- For a dispute the company does not resolve, the National Consumer Commission is on 012 065 1940
- If the vehicle is insured and the transporter disputes liability, log the claim with your own insurer in parallel rather than waiting for the outcome
