Lenovo runs two separate South African support lines, and which one you need depends on which half of the range your machine comes from. Get this wrong and you will be transferred; the split is not obvious from the product name.

Lenovo South Africa support numbers

• THINK products: toll free 0800 007 313, or 021 426 8279 from a landline
• IDEA products: 011 201 7745

The toll-free THINK line is the only free one of the three. The 021 number is a Cape Town landline and the 011 a Johannesburg one, both charged at standard rates.

Which line is yours

• THINK covers the business range: ThinkPad laptops, ThinkBook, ThinkCentre desktops, ThinkStation workstations and ThinkSystem servers.
• IDEA covers the consumer range: IdeaPad, IdeaCentre, Yoga, Legion gaming machines and Lenovo tablets and phones.
• If the badge on the lid says ThinkPad or ThinkBook, use the THINK line even if you bought it at a retailer for home use.

What to have ready

Lenovo support works off the machine serial number, which is on a sticker on the underside of a laptop or the back of a desktop, and also readable from the system information screen. Warranty status is tied to that serial rather than to your purchase receipt, so the agent can tell you whether you are in warranty before you find the invoice. Driver downloads, warranty look-up, repair booking and system updates are all self-service on the Lenovo support site and do not need a call at all.

Repairs and service centres

Lenovo does not repair machines at the Bryanston office. It works through authorised service providers, and its site carries a service-provider locator that returns the approved centre nearest a given address. Using an unauthorised repairer on an in-warranty machine will usually void the remaining warranty, so check the locator before you hand a laptop over.

Buying, and the counterfeit problem

• Lenovo sells through its own online store and through authorised retailers; the Where to Buy page on lenovo.com lists them.
• Chargers and batteries are the most commonly counterfeited Lenovo parts. A fake charger will not be covered and can damage the machine.
• A product recall page runs on lenovo.com. It is worth checking the serial against it if a machine is behaving oddly on battery.
