How to check if an accountant is SAIPA registered

Checking an accountant. Before you hire someone who calls themselves a Professional Accountant (SA), search the SAIPA member verification tool at saipa.co.za/member-verification by membership number or full name. It returns the member’s name, number and designation. You can also check by phone on 011 207 7840 or by email to members@saipa.co.za. SAIPA has no power over a person who is not a member, but it does want to hear from you if a non-member claims the designation.

How to lay a complaint with SAIPA

Laying a complaint. A complaint against a member must be an original sworn affidavit, commissioned by a Commissioner of Oaths, setting out what happened with all supporting documents. Attach the signed Complainant’s Undertaking form from the SAIPA complaints page, which allows SAIPA to send your affidavit to the member. Deliver the originals to SAIPA House and direct questions to legal@saipa.co.za.

SAIPA does not handle fee disputes. It expects you to discuss the fee first, then try a mediator at your own cost, then use the civil courts. It also puts a complaint on hold while the member is in litigation over the same matter.

Escalation route

  1. The member has 21 working days to respond to your affidavit, and you then have 21 working days to reply.
  2. SAIPA’s Investigation Committee can fine or reprimand the member, or refer the case to the Disciplinary Committee.
  3. The Disciplinary Committee can suspend or cancel membership.
