Meerkat was founded in 2016 by actuary David O’Brien. Its main products are:
- Debt review: Meerkat is a registered debt counsellor, NCRDC2613 (as the company states it). It charges no upfront fees for debt review; its costs are regulated and built into the monthly repayment plan.
- Debt review clearance certificate: a 6-step process that starts online with your ID number and 3 security questions. The application fee is R1750.
- Funeral cover: from R45 a month, with cover up to R60,000, no medical tests, and valid claims paid within 24 hours. The cover is underwritten by Old Mutual Alternative Risk Transfer Limited (OMART Life).
- Group funeral cover: aimed at stokvels, church groups and communities.
- Credit life cover and savings.
