The Guardian’s Fund holds money paid to the Master for minors, persons incapable of managing their own affairs, unborn heirs, and missing or absent persons. The Department of Justice explains how it works:

• The money is invested with the Public Investment Commission. Interest is compounded monthly and paid for up to five years after the money becomes claimable.
• Maintenance can be claimed on forms J341 and J341A. It is paid from interest plus up to R250 000 of capital, for needs such as school fees, medical costs and clothing.
• Minors claim their capital and interest at 18 (or on marriage or a court declaration) on form J251, with a certified ID and fingerprint verification.
• Unclaimed accounts are advertised in the Government Gazette every September. Money unclaimed for 30 years is forfeited to the state.
• Administration is free. Tracing agents may not collect payments, and the fund pays only by EFT into the beneficiary’s own bank account.
