The National Research Foundation (NRF) switchboard is +27 (0)12 481 4000, and general queries go to info@nrf.ac.za. The NRF is an independent government agency set up by the National Research Foundation Act (Act No. 23 of 1998) that funds researchers and postgraduate students, runs NRF rating and operates South Africa’s national research facilities.

Services and responsibilities

The NRF’s work covers three main areas:

  • Funding: it funds researchers and postgraduate students, including the DSTI-NRF postgraduate student funding calls, such as the call for the 2027 academic year.
  • NRF rating: it evaluates and rates researchers, with a Call for Applications for Evaluation and Rating 2026.
  • National research facilities: iThemba LABS, SAAO, SAEON, SAIAB and SARAO. SAASTA leads the NRF’s science engagement work.

Applications and escalation

Funding applications, rating applications and progress reports run through the NRF Connect system. If your NRF Connect profile has duplicates or a progress report is locked, email the NRF Support Desk at supportdesk@nrf.ac.za to have it fixed.
