What this organisation provides
De Beers calls Venetia South Africa’s largest diamond producer by value. The mine began as an open-pit diamond mine in 1992 on the farm Venetia 130 MS, and its mining-right area covers about 3 000 ha.
Once the open pit reached about 450 m, the K1 and K2 kimberlite reserves moved to underground mining as the Venetia Underground Project. De Beers says this US$2.3 billion underground expansion started in 2015.
De Beers created the Venetia Limpopo Nature Reserve around the mine, and says the mine recycles a third of its process water. The mining right number is M29/2009 (DMR reference LP: 30/5/1/2/5/58MR).
