The Vaal Reef in this area is now mined by Harmony Gold’s Moab Khotsong operation, which Harmony lists on 018 478 1682. Vaal Reefs was the historic Anglo American and AngloGold gold complex near Orkney and Klerksdorp; the name is no longer used for an operating mine, and Harmony acquired Moab Khotsong from AngloGold Ashanti in 2018.

Location and operating information
Moab Khotsong lies in the Klerksdorp goldfield, about 180km south-west of Johannesburg. It began production in 2003 and is Harmony’s youngest high-grade, deep-level South African gold mine. Harmony does not publish office hours for the mine.
Services at this location
Moab Khotsong has three shaft systems serving the top mine (Great Noligwa), the middle mine and the lower mine (the Zaaiplaats growth project). Its primary orebody is the Vaal Reef, and ore is processed at the Noligwa gold plant.
